Magma cg
Art Direction, Branding, Graphic Design
2012
Disagreement with reality.
Immanence.
Transfiguration.
Magma absorbs form, enveloped her in a black cocoon (black body), gathers light within itself.
Light is energy. White light breaks through the dark membrane appearing as iridescent spots, just as the rays of light piercing through heavy clouds, as a rainbow after storm.

commercial logo research - logos designed by

rcooper joinery - logo inspiration

Im starting a new brief today, re-brand of my dads joinery company, RCooper Joinery/Space plan-it.
Been trying to come up with concepts for logos but been stuck coming up with any great ideas.
Here is some visual reference to help spark some ideas.

http://www.brandingserved.com/gallery/Projac/3507457

Projac is a precision engineering company, that creates and develops measuring systems for the automotive industry.
This is the type of logo design that i need to start looking into, fit for purpose, works for the company and communicates the message that they wish to show. It also fits is nicely with each of the outcomes that it has been printed on from business cards to letter heads.

Signika - typeface

Signika Sample

Found this typeface t'other day and thought it would be perfect for the vitro-regeneration brief with Matt. Signika is a 'friendly' quite quirky san serif typeface but with a classy feel to it. Would work perfectly for things such as headers and short bodies of text within the publications applied in a similar way to how it has been done in these images to give an clear, friendly read.

Vitro-regeneration - logo concepts.

Spoke to Matt's dad about the company name, we gave him some of our suggestions along with some of his own and we decided to settle on Prolifera Tech. The name itself isn't the 'prettiest' company name to work with however for the type of company it is and what they wish to communicate through the branding it works perfectly. Needs to be a slightly commercial logo design however Matts dad says he is open to a more contemporary twist on it to help portray his modern techniques and experimentations.

Here are some logos for similar companies that i feel work really well.

Ritator - Swedish design and advertising agency

''‘Under’ is a book commissioned by artist Peter Johansson. In 1989 Johansson cast twenty concrete sculptures. Each sculpture has a different material combined with the concrete, such as metal, sausage, soap, plaster or cheese.''

Really clever concept for a book cover by Ritator, the book is very representative of its subject matter

petri - dish: artwork

One of the concepts that we came up with was to use petri-dishes to create all the imagery to be used within the design work. Using bacteria/what-ever-we-can to create really interesting colours, shapes and patterns that we can photograph at really high quality and utilize the images for the design work.

One problem we face is neither of me and Matt has a brilliant understanding of biology therefore lots of experimentation with petri-dishes and different materials will need to be carried out to find out how we can produce these colourful interesting patterns.

These designs have been created by Adam Barak, he has created the basic skeleton of the hebrew letters using bacteria from his mouth on petri-dishes. Really interesting concept however the over all outcome isnt too interesting, the dishes are not really too great to look at whereas he had potential to produce some really nice imagery using these dishes.

Rosalind Stoughton - infinity: yearbook design

''2012 Yearbook for the BA (Hons.) Photography course at Leeds College of Art and accompanying promotion for their Graduate Show.''

Link

Photography yearbook designed by Ros Stoughton [just graduated off our course]:
I saw the design work for this a while back and instantly thought it worked really well, managed to get myself a copy of it the other day.
The combination of typography with strong - vibrant - photography works perfectly, gives the book an overall visually pleasing aesthetic which instantly catches your eye. Working with strong photography along wit type was an idea we had for our brief, combining the two to make really crisp outcomes such as these.

graphene - artem bogachev

''School start-ups is the graph after the material graphene (graphene)Graphene was first obtained by Russian scientists Andrei Geim and Konstantin Novoselov from the University of Manchester in 2004, and already in the 2010th this discovery was the Nobel Prize. Graphene - a layer of graphite (hexagonal lattice of carbon atoms), one atom thick. Graphene - the thinnest solid substance with a mass of useful properties. Amazing simplicity of the experiment, conducted by Geim and Novoselov. They painted a few strokes with a pencil (graphite rod) on an adhesive tape. Then stuck to it a second piece of tape and unstick them. Graphite is divided in half. They again took a clean piece of tape and then unstick them. Layer was again divided in half. For dozens of divisions they have this layer one atom.''

Corporate identity for a start up science company, that specialises in material graphene.
This is the overall branding for the business, which i feel fits the company perfectly. The simple vector shapes, colour limitations and overall minimalist style really works for a contemporary science company. However would not really apply to the company that we are branding -  i feel a bit of this work is slightly too modern and minimalist; making it not really fit for purpose within the science industry where the purpose of the design would be more important the the aesthetic, therefore information would have to displayed clearly - easily read and understood - which does not really work here. Some of the work, it too minimalist and although it looks really crisp it would not necessarily be appreciated by people working in the science field.

Science museum - rebrand

Science Museum re-brand
''Science and technology are ever-changing subjects in both form and shape. The more we learn about science and the more advanced we become in technology, the more they changes in the way we view them.
This non-static and fluid visual identity reflects upon these subjects and tells a story. It allows room for movement, growth and transformation in any shape or size.''

Branding for a science museum, relates to our project as it will be seen by a similar audience; therefore has to be fit for purpose, has a high class traditional feel along with a contemporary twist to keep it current, I feel it works quite well as a branding especially the logo, something similar to this would work perfectly for the vitro-regeneration brief. One way i would improve it however would be with the random shapes that have been applied to each design, it does work in tie-ing all design work together however on things such as posters and letterheads it is slightly too overpowering, should be slightly more subtle - minimalist.

Core laboratories - lab report design

Lab reports -
Couldn't really find any well designed lab reports/experiment reports.
Reports such as these would usually be published by labs to help showcase their experiments and results to the wold. Therefore as part of our projects we will be designing these publications for vitro-regeneration to be printed around the world. These papers would have to have a formal feel to them within the design due to the wide audience that will see them; however after looking through a few examples it seems that not so much consideration is put into the design work behind them at all, which would give us the scope to do something completely different to other labs in order to push the potential of company and have them seen by a much larger audience. Unlike these examples we will try not to stick to generic styles; try to be different to push the capabilities of the lab reports, however not too experimental because the over all design has to be relevant for it's purpose; form follows function. Just give them a nice overall design aesthetic to make people want to see them.

Vitro regeneration research paper

Trying to get my head around vitro-regeneration.

Here is a PDF of a full length research paper about written by Blackson L. K. Thokozani from Africa Biotechnical laboratory.

http://www.nri.org/projects/adappt/docs/Thokozani2011Bobgunnia.pdf

The paper is quite hard to get your head around, especially to me who has only heard of the subject for a few weeks and is yet to fully understand it. This study involved two separate
experiments. The first evaluated the effect of pre-sowing treatments and growing medium on ex vitro
seed germination and early seedling development. The second experiment involved  in vitro
germination, shoot initiation and rooting of shoots; which basically covers what Matthew's dads company covers. The papers cover these two experiment, explains how they are done as well as breaking down the results for you.

Content like this is very useful because as part of the brief we are going to publish papers such as this within nicely laid out publications which follows the overall aesthetic of the company which we choose. Therefore it will give us some interesting content to experiment with for initial design concepts for these publications whilst we wait for the content from Matthews dad.

N. Daniels identiy

N. Daniels
Identity and Stationary Design.

This is the stationary design for N. Daniels, a rep and photo producer in Vienna. It's simple, cool and thermo sensitive. The black color of the varnish fades at body temperature - as soon as you hold it in your hands you literally produce an image by yourself. It's a dynamic and living design - the business cards are little polaroids with a constantly changing surface.
Really clever idea to use heat reactive paper for the identity of company, as it can be applied to almost all printed material also is very reflective of the company itself; makes the printed material interesting to hold which makes people keep onto them more than others.
Would be interesting to apply an approach similarly to this for the 'vitro-regeneration' brief.
An outcome with a bit of theory/thought behind it to make it relevant for the subject matter.

Bambooman - album/ep artwork

Artwork for some of bambooman Ep's and albums, very indie-est illustrative style behind the design work which although they are aesthetically pleaseing i do not feel they fully represents his experimental, down-tempo, future-beats music.
I feel the music would be much better illustrated with a much more expressive image rather than illustrations.
