illustration - alex pardee

alex pardee

Alex Pardee is a freelance artist, apparel designer, and a writer born in Antioch, California, well known for album artwork for bands such as the used.
Even though his style is way off from the sort of work i want to create for this brief i feel is is still relevant to look at to see the amount of detail he puts into his illustrations. Using thin pen strokes to really get fine detail into his work has a really nice effect combining the nice neat detail with the rough sketchy outlines works really well.

Illustrator - Jeremy Fish

Jeremy Fish
Another illustrator that ive been pretty keen on recently is Jeremy Fish. His artwork is fun whilst still conveying serious messages using humor and intelligence. He has an odd unique illustrative style using a surreal blend of tattoo and graffiti imagery. One thing which really stands out for me with his work is the shading technique he uses within the illustrations, really detailed and makes the design really stands out. Using lines for shading is something i have always tried to do but never been able to do it sucessfully, maybe it will be something i will try incorporate within my designs.

illustrators - michael sieben

michael sieben
Michael Sieben is an Austin based artist. A surrealist fine artist/illustrator. One this i really love about his illustrations is the unusual backgrounds and canvasses, using the canvasses to really make his illustrations stand out instead of just having them stuck in the middle of a white page, however this may not be very relevant to my project because having my illustrations surrounded by white space would help the minimalist feel. His work has a nice unique style which you can instantly relate to him which is something i really appreciate about illustrators, the detail his manages to put into these mainly linear illustrations is incredible.

Richard Kuoch

An artist, illustrator, animator and graphic designer from Auckland, New Zealand but based in London. Utilising his background in animation and graphic design, he follows his motto “Blink, Smile, Share” by creating characters and illustrations that show his fun and unique take on life through art.
Im not really much of a fan of his illustration work, however i really like his sketches, the amount he is able to cram into one page along with the concept and constant flow of ideas is great. i felt This illustrator was relevant to my project because his work is usually focussed around animals, mainly pandas. Even though i would like my illustrations to be allot more detailed then his, to help further show the comparison between illustration and minimalist illustrations their is still allot of influences which i can take from his work. Such as the layout and certain aspects of the animals, shape, size etc..

illustrators - MR GAUKY

i felt because the concept behind my project has changed to become a more illustrative based brief using both minimalist and detailed illustrations combining the two within a book i should look at some more illustrators for some inspiration.

Mr gauky

Mr gauky is an illustrator from yorkshire working as a freelance designer. He has this unique style of illustrating which you can instantly recognise as his. His illustrations are great, so much detail and with a style i havnt seen before which is difficult to achieve with illustration, creating a unique style. The thing i like best about his illustrations are the eyes, they are so strange, dont necessarily look like eyes however the detail used around them make them really stand out. The fur on the fox works really well aswel, fur being something i have always struggled with illustrating and maybe incorporating some of Mr gaukys style within mine would help allot.

Milan KithKin
Milan Kithkin came into our uni not long ago as a visiting professional to give a talk about his work.
His work is very relevant to the work that im doing at the moment, especially this one 'cube font'. The minimalist style with lines all parallel to each other and only flowing in 3 directions, this sort of style could work very well within my book, using this style with minimalist editorial to really make the typography stand out.

New Alphabet
Designed in 1967, the new alphabet only uses vertical and horizontal lines designed using a monospace grid with every letter the same width and height. The majority of letters are based on 9 by 5 unit grid with 45 degree slants used on certain corners. For me i dont really see it as being very legible letters such as the a j x and z looking nothing like the original letterforms, however somehow you can still read it with slight difficulty. The concept behind it is great however the output doesnt is illegible but I think with practice it could be just as legible as the normal one.
